TERMITES

Termites cause more than a billion dollars in damage to American homes every year. A full blown colony of termites can eat several pounds of wood in your home every week. Most people don't know they have termites until extensive damage is done. Termites divide their work among specialized members. Worker termites do most of the damage, but chances are you will never see a worker termite. You may however see a "swarmer" or "alate". These termites travel and start new colonies.

Termites are attracted to moisture. It is best to keep gutters clean and divert water away from your foundation with downspouts. Termites tunnel through soil and leave a chemical trail for more termites to follow. They feed 24 hours a day.

SPIDERS

There are thousands of species of spiders, which often makes it difficult to identify them. Spiders can live for long periods of time without food and are sometimes hard to kill, even with the use of pesticides. Most species of spiders hide in cracks, dark areas, or webs. Spiders may bite if they are disturbed. The Black Widow and Brown Recluse species are poisonous. Untreated spider bites often result in an open sore. It is best to seek medical attention if you suspect you have been bitten by a poisonous spider.

ANTS

Carpenter Ants can establish colonies inside your walls or roof, in areas where wood becomes wet from a leak. They do not eat the wood, but tunnel through it for nesting purposes. This often causes extensive damage to homes. They are a common wood destroying pest, as well as the largest of the home invading ants.

Pavement Ants are smaller and can enter your home in search of food. These ants feed on basically anything a human will eat. They are usually found in large quantities anywhere food is stored or consumed. Pavement ants nest in crevices in woodwork, masonry, or under stones and concrete slabs.

Ants are carriers of staph infections and salmonellosis

CENTIPEDES

Centipedes are worm-like in form and are commonly found outdoors under wood piles or stones. Those that live indoors are usually found in damp basements, bathrooms, or unexcavated areas under the house.

There are over 1,000 species of centipedes in the United States. They can live for up to six years and are known for their many legs. Centipedes can bite, but cause no structural damage.

CRICKETS

Crickets are primarily found outdoors but sometimes wander indoors. They are often found in large numbers. At night, groups of crickets will congregate around light. When indoors, crickets are known to damage fabrics, food, and paper, as well as other household items. Male crickets make a chirping noise to attract female crickets. This can be a nuisance for homeowners.

WASPS

Although wasps feed on insects such as houseflies and garden pests, some can also be dangerous to people. Wasps are known to cause allergic reactions which sometimes result in death. However, most wasps typically ignore people unless approached. They are very territorial.

Wasps produce nests either from mud or from paper fibers they collect from trees. These nests can be found attached to twigs, rocks, or human structures.

There are approximately 75,000 known species of wasps. They are most active in the summer and fall.

MICE

Mice are small, nocturnal animals. Their bodies rarely exceed two inches long and one ounce in weight. They are usually grey in color, but some may appear darker. Mice are capable of jumping approximately 12" vertical and can climb almost any vertical surface. Mice have poor eye sight. They use their long whiskers as sensors, as well as their sense of smell and sound. Mice will usually nest in insulation in attics or in stoves and under refrigerators. They will not travel far from their nest. A mouse will usually eat anything a human will eat, as well as cardboard, insulation, and sheet rock. Mice are known to spread diseases such as dermatitis, dysentery, meningitis, rabies, and spotted fever, as well as many others.
